Alongside Care
Stephanie Saunders, Health Care Aide

About Stephanie

I’m a Health Care Aide based in southwest Calgary. Most of my six years of caregiving has been in hospice and palliative care — supporting people and families through some of the hardest chapters of life. Over the last year I’ve moved into private in-home care for seniors who want to stay in the home they’ve built, with their independence and dignity intact.

The work is the practical, everyday things: bathing and dressing, meals, mobility, companionship, errands, medication reminders. Some clients need help for a few weeks after a hospital discharge. Some need longer-term support as their needs evolve. What I bring from the hospice years is steadiness when things get harder — the same face, the same hands, every visit.

When people ask me about hospice work specifically — what stands out, what stays with me — I never have a clean answer. Every day in hospice is a moment, because for my patients it’s their last moments. I take that responsibility seriously, and I’d rather speak to it through how I work than how I tell the story afterward.

I’ve lived in southwest Calgary for over 20 years. My community is here, my friends are here, and starting Alongside Care is partly about being of service to the neighbourhood I’ve called home for half my life. When you call, you’re not calling a national agency. You’re calling someone from your part of the city.

When I’m not working, I’m cooking with my kids — currently on a sourdough journey — or out hiking with Rue, our huge English Mastiff and Saint Bernard mix.

My belief is simple: seniors deserve dignity, autonomy, and independence — every day. The work I do is the practical side of that belief.
